If you've driven down 40th Street in Temescal lately, you've seen the line. It snakes out of a colorful shipping container village, past the vibrant murals, and right into the hearts of Oakland locals. This is Tacos Oscar, and it is arguably the happiest place in the East Bay to eat a taco.
What started as a pop-up has cemented itself as a brick-and-mortar (well, shipping-container-and-mortar) staple. In a city full of incredible taco trucks, Tacos Oscar carves its own lane by focusing on creativity, high-quality ingredients, and—most importantly—the tortilla.
The Vibe
Eating at Tacos Oscar feels like attending a backyard party at your coolest friend's house. The seating is mostly outdoors in a shared courtyard, illuminated by string lights and surrounded by bright colors. It's casual, loud in the best way, and unpretentious.
It's the perfect spot for a date (even a Valentine's one!) where you don't want the pressure of a tablecloth but still want food that shows you care.
The Food
The foundation of everything here is the house-nixtamalized corn tortilla. You can taste the corn. It's earthy, sturdy enough to hold the generous fillings, but tender to the bite.
"The broccoli taco will make you question why you ever needed meat in a taco."
The menu rotates often, but you can usually find classics like Pork Chile Verde or Braised Beef. However, Tacos Oscar shines brightest with its vegetable-forward options. The Charred Broccoli Taco with peanut salsa is legendary. The Fried Egg Taco is breakfast-for-dinner perfection. And they always have a vegan option that feels like a main event, not an afterthought.
Don't skip the tostadas if they're on the menu, and always, always order the beans.
