The Smash Burger Renaissance: East Bay Edition

Crispy edges, gooey cheese, and potato buns. We ate way too much beef for this.

Oakland has always been a food town, but something special happened in the last few years: the Smash Burger took over. We're not talking about those thick, pub-style patties that fall apart when you look at them. We're talking about lacy, caramelized beef pressed so thin on a hot griddle it almost defies physics. Here is the definitive Hyphy Burger guide to getting your smash fix.

Alameda / Pop-up

Smish Smash: The OG

If there is a king of the East Bay smash scene, it's Smish Smash. Starting as a driveway pop-up that had lines down the block, they set the standard. The "lacing" on their patties is legendary—crispy, salty beef candy that extends well past the bun.

The Order: The classic Smish. Double patty, American cheese, pickles, onion, and their house sauce. It’s simplicity perfected.

Lana's: The New Classic

Lana's feels like it's been here forever, even though it's relatively new. They actually learned the smash technique from the Smish Smash crew, but they've made it their own in a beautiful brick-and-mortar spot near Swan's Market.

The Vibe: It’s chill, fast, and consistent. The Double Smash here is arguably the most photogenic burger in the Town, but it tastes even better. Don't skip the chili oil if they have it.

Lovely's: The Diner Dream

Located inside Two Pitchers Brewing, Lovely's serves up nostalgia on a tray. It’s got that 50s diner aesthetic but with modern execution. The burgers are greasy in the best way possible, and the outdoor seating makes it a perfect sunny day spot.

Insider Tip: Their Fried Onion Burger is a flavor bomb. And since you're at a brewery, a cold radler is the mandatory pairing.

Sideshow Kitchen: The Vibe Check

While known for their chicken, the Sideshow Burger is a serious contender. It’s a classic smash-style patty with grilled onions and house sauce, best enjoyed on their massive sunny patio with a local beer.

Pro Tip: It’s super dog-friendly. Bring the pup.

TrueBurger: The Reliable Veteran

Before the smash craze fully hit, there was TrueBurger. They don't go as ultra-thin/lacy as the others, but they deliver a perfect, no-nonsense burger every single time. It's fast, affordable, and consistently delicious.

Don't Miss: The Milkshakes. Specifically the Toasted Marshmallow if it's on rotation. It's a meal in itself.

Clove & Hoof: The Butcher Standard

Okay, it's not technically a "smash burger" (it's thicker, juicier, and more medium-rare), but we can't talk about East Bay beef without mentioning the C&H Burger. Made from house-ground meat right next to the butcher case, it's a gourmet experience that still feels down-to-earth.

The Secret: It's the pimento cheese. That tangy, creamy kick elevates the whole thing.
